Passing This Along – Interesting Note on Fainting Pigs

I just had a quick meeting with a colleague of mine who is a meat broker.   In particular he focuses on pork products and he’s been having a very slow summer. The prices for pork products are such that there is limited opportunity and the supply is also constrained.

More interesting is the fact that the pigs are fainting when they get to the processing facilities. It seems that the combination of being underfed and overheated is creating a problem. The pigs that faint are branded and sent back to the farmer and no longer able to be sold. So, not only are the problems with feed costs creating a distorted market condition, but the heat and health are also now taking their toll on the animals.
