Yes, earnings have been somewhat consistent over time, but again it has been much more about financial engineering than anything else.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50494\" src=\"https:\/\/thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IBM_earnings1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IBM_earnings1.jpg 458w, https:\/\/thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IBM_earnings1-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A much better way to look at earnings is to compare the growth over time. This calculated the quarterly growth over the same period a year ago.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50496\" src=\"https:\/\/thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IBM-Earningsgrowth.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"446\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IBM-Earningsgrowth.jpg 446w, https:\/\/thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IBM-Earningsgrowth-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course analysts have high hopes for the future &#8211; as they often do. But also remember that any estimates may be off of a lower comparison period.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that can&#8217;t be fudged is revenues. This is something that we look at closely when we know that a company is active in a large-scale share buyback program.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50497\" src=\"https:\/\/thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/ibmrevenues.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/ibmrevenues.jpg 458w, https:\/\/thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/ibmrevenues-300x204.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The chart above is a look at revenues over time and looks as though there is a consistency on a quarter-by-quarter basis. Something does not add up. This is why the stock is getting hit today as there is an expectation that estimates will have to come down.<\/p>\n<p>The table below sums up just how ugly things are for IBM. Not a picture of a stock that has figured out how to grow through acquisition, innovation or otherwise.
