The CHART OF THE DAY shows the cost of converting euro-based payments into dollars as measured by the three-month cross-currency basis swap, which CSC\u2018s Conor Howell said is key for measuring the \u201ctrue euro-zone liquidity crunch.\u201d\u009d It last week fell <!--more-->as much as 93 basis points below the euro interbank offered rate, or Euribor, indicating a higher premium to buy the greenback.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>(click to enlarge\/expand chart)<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/euroswaps.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14446\" title=\"euroswaps\" src=\"https:\/\/thedisciplinedinvestor.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/euroswaps-300x191-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in large European bank failure zone anywhere over minus 150 basis points,\u201d\u009d said Howell, head of ETF trading at CSC in London. \u201cThis is driving the equity market. Since the banks are on everyone\u2018s radar right now this is certainly something you would want to have up on your screen.\u201d\u009d Banks have led an 18 percent drop in the benchmark Stoxx Europe 600 Index from its high this year on Feb. 17, extending a global rout that has wiped out more than $6 trillion in equity value since July 26.
